Year 4 Spring Curriculum Report - Spring Term 2010

Dear Parents/Carers,

Sarah and Sophie would like to welcome you and your child back to Grafton for the New Year. We hope that you had a good break and the children are refreshed and ready for the spring term.

Literacy

We will continue following the National Literacy Framework and utilising the Ruth Miskin spelling programme to support spelling in the literacy. Some children will be following the Ruth Miskin Reading Programme to develop their reading skills. Regular reading every night at home will continue to support the children's reading skills and enjoyment of literature.

Numeracy

In maths we will continue to follow the National Numeracy Framework. Daily mental maths activities will support the children's' key skills such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also investigate fractions, decimals and units of measurement emphasising mass and time. We will continue to investigate real life problems. We will also be developing our skills of data handling in our science lessons. Helping your child to learn their times tables and supporting their maths homework will ensure that they are able to use these skills more effectively in class.

Science

In Science we will be investigating temperature and friction. The children will learn about different types of insulators. We will then investigate what friction is and its place in our daily life. We will relate this to Greek scientists such as Archimedes, to enable the children to gain perspective in the roots of scientific knowledge today.

Ancient Greece

Our topic for this term is "Ancient Greece" and this theme will permeate our curriculum throughout the term. We will uncover elements of ancient Greek culture and philosophy. We will draw comparisons between ancient and modern day Greece. This should prove to be an exciting and fascinating look at the past. Our study of ancient Greek life will continue through art, where we will be exploring Greek architecture and creating our own buildings. In the second half of the term we look forward to working together with Diane Samuels, our writer in residence, exploring a Greek Myth.

Religious Education

We will be covering Principles for Living and Sikhism in R.E and exploring the rules and values that people of faith hold and the impact this has on their everyday lives. This links with the new unit on Citizenship, "How do Rules and Laws Affect Me?" We will be working together as a class appreciate why we need rules and how they help us at home, in school and in our wider communities.

Music

The Soundstart project will continue this term and has proved to be very popular and successful. The children have already shown that they are progressing with their instruments and with their understanding of the musical elements such as rhythm, pitch, tempo, composition and appreciation.

French

French will also continue this term with our French teachers, Dawn Joseph for Orange class and Adriane for Lilac. The children will continue to practise and extend their conversational skills and vocabulary.

Physical Education

Orange class will continue to have swimming on a Wednesday and Lilac on a Friday. Children must ensure that long hair is tied back, jewellery is removed and asthma inhalers (if the child is asthmatic) are available for these sessions. Please help your child to remember their swimming costume for these sessions. Both classes will be working with a tennis coach on Wednesday. Your child will need a t-shirt and shorts or tracksuit bottoms and be wearing trainers for these sessions.

Further Information

Please can you ensure that you drop off and collect your children on time as this encourages good habits for the future. If you have any questions or concerns about the forthcoming term please feel free to approach us.

Regards,
