Year 6

Curriculum Report Year 6 - Spring Term 2010

As you know your child will be sitting their end of Key Stage SATS next term. These exams start on Monday 10th May and continue for the entire week. From now until that time the revision necessary will gradually take precedence over Curriculum time in the classroom. By the middle of March, revision and practice for the types of questions we expect to come up in the exams will occupy almost all of our time except for athletics and swimming sessions.

We will be holding a meeting to discuss the SATS and related work on Tuesday 26th January, 2010 at 4pm where we can answer all your questions. These meetings are a great opportunity for you to find out how to support your child through their first external examinations.

Homework classes will start after half term (week beginning 22nd February) and will be on these days:

  • Tuesday        4pm - 5pm
  • Wednesday   4pm - 5pm

English

In English, this term, we will be looking at both fiction and non-fiction writing. The fiction focus will be on story writing and poetry. The non-fiction focus will be to study report writing, recounts, explanation and instruction writing, as well as persuasion and discussion. In addition, we will continue to work on basic skills such as spelling, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation and comprehension.

Numeracy

In Numeracy we will be covering the following areas in our daily lessons:

  •           Addition and subtraction
  •           Multiplication and division. Children need to know by heart multiplication and division facts up to 10 x 10 and the partition method for mental calculation.
  •           Shape and Space including measures and time, reading scales and conversion of metric units eg: kilometres (km) into metres (m).
  •           Fractions, decimals and simple percentages.
  •           Data Handling - graphs and data charts including pie-charts and Venn diagrams.
  •           Word and Number problems.
  •           Simple probability.
  •          Use of estimation and approximation including rounding.
  •          Properties of number - multiples, factors, prime and squared numbers etc.

In addition, we will also be doing weekly maths investigations where skills learned can be put into practice.

Science

In Science we will be revising the following aspects of the curriculum:

  •           Keeping Healthy
  •           Heart, pulse rate and exercise
  •           Plants and how they make food
  •           Habitats
  •           Gases and changing states e.g.: evaporation and condensation
  •           Our Earth and the solar system
  •          Making and changing sounds
  •           Forces including gravity, friction, and water and air resistance
  •           How we see things including shadows and reflections
  •           Electricity including making and drawing circuit diagrams

Further Information

This is a very important term for your child and it is essential that homework is completed on time and that reading becomes a daily activity.

Attendance and punctuality is vital to your child's success, since lessons missed will not be repeated so obviously your child will be less prepared than their classmates for these very demanding exams.

Also because of the extra energy that revision requires, it is essential that your child has enough sleep and a healthy breakfast before school, in order to get through the very demanding school day.

If you have any further questions or concerns please make an appointment to see either of us.
