At Grafton Primary School, we believe mathematics is about far more than getting the right answer.
It is about helping children make sense of the world around them.
From telling the time and managing money to measuring ingredients, reading timetables and solving everyday problems, mathematics gives children the confidence to navigate life with independence and understanding.
More importantly, it teaches children how to think. How to reason. How to persevere. How to approach a challenge with confidence rather than fear.
Our aim is that every child leaves Grafton not simply able to calculate, but believing they are capable of solving problems both inside and outside the classroom.
Every Child Is a Mathematician
One of the biggest barriers to learning mathematics is the belief that some people are simply "good at maths" while others are not.
We don't believe that. Rather, we believe that:
- Every child can develop mathematical understanding.
- Every child can grow in confidence.
- Every child can become a successful mathematician.
Children arrive at different starting points and every learning journey is unique. Our role is to meet children where they are, build secure understanding and celebrate every step of progress along the way.
Because confidence grows through success, and success grows through confidence.
Understanding Before Memorising
Children's mathematical understanding develops over time, with each new concept carefully building on secure foundations laid in previous years.
We know that confidence comes from understanding, so we never rush children through new learning before they are ready. Instead, our curriculum is thoughtfully sequenced, allowing children to revisit, strengthen and extend their mathematical thinking as they move through the school.
Using a mastery approach, children explore concepts in depth before moving on. Practical resources and mathematical equipment help children make sense of new ideas, visual representations deepen understanding, and discussion encourages children to explain their thinking using precise mathematical language.
As children's confidence grows, they move naturally from concrete resources, to visual representations and finally to abstract reasoning, developing the independence and flexibility needed to solve increasingly complex problems.
Rather than asking, "Have they finished this topic?" we ask, "Have they truly understood it?"
Secure understanding today becomes confident mathematical thinking tomorrow. We want children to understand mathematics, not simply remember procedures.
Learning Through Problem Solving
Problem solving sits at the heart of our mathematics curriculum.
Children are encouraged to investigate, reason and think critically rather than simply applying a remembered method.
- Sometimes the first attempt won't work.
- Sometimes another strategy is needed.
- Sometimes a mistake becomes the beginning of a better solution.
That is why we celebrate perseverance as much as accuracy. Mistakes aren't something to fear — they are an important part of learning.
Mathematics in Everyday Life
We want children to recognise that mathematics doesn't begin and end with a lesson. They see it in the kitchen when ingredients are measured. They see it when reading a bus timetable or planning a journey. They see it when managing money, estimating costs, measuring distance or organising their day.
Throughout school, teachers make these real-life connections so that children understand not only how mathematics works, but why it matters.
When children understand its purpose, mathematics becomes meaningful.

Every child begins their mathematical journey from a different starting point and we believe every child deserves to experience success.
Our teachers continually assess children's understanding, adapting their teaching to meet individual needs.
